Young adults want and need independence.

Young adults are more than ready to live on their own and forge an important independent chapter in their life story. Their desire for independence, however, often lacks balance. Many young adults struggle to maintain healthy relationships and to gain confidence through their achievements. Young adults need structure and support that will help them manage the rigors of full time education and the social side of young adult life. Unfortunately, our current culture seems to reward immediate gratification rather than discipline and resilience. Technology and incessant access to screens have created the expectation that results happen instantly and that gratification is immediate. This culture is also associated with disintegration of meaningful family relationships. Rite Passage provides the structure and support that facilitate resilience, including the balance of autonomy and connection, as well as the balance between disciplined full time study or work and management of an instant gratification culture. When navigated in a healthy manner, these experiences cultivate our pillars of change, namely connection, clarity, commitment and confidence.

Pillars of Change:

Connection
During this rite of passage, there is an inherent conflict between physical separation and connection.

As the structure and experience of physical separation changes, families naturally shift from emotional distance to reconnection. During this process, parents and young adults will begin to more effectively manage the difficult balance between autonomy and emotional closeness.

Commitment
During this rite of passage the effects of connection and clarity naturally facilitate the motivation needed for successful adult engagement.

A healthy life is shaped through commitments which includes learning to prioritize, evaluate, and let go of maladaptive patterns. As commitments are kept, a stronger sense of competence develops, healthy relationships emerge, and confidence is created and sustained. Our environment provides autonomy, balanced with emotional, social, academic, and vocational support to enhance the process of commitment. Our life experience includes commitments to self, others and emerging mature principles.

Clarity
During this rite of passage the initial experience often includes ambiguity and anxiety.

With a light scaffolding of support, young adults can begin to clarify values and create a vision of college completion.  This vision of success is directly correlated with reduced anxiety and improved emotional well-being. The balance of support and autonomy facilitates the young adult’s independence enhances the ability to set goals and maintain personal clarity well beyond young adulthood.

Confidence
During this transition into adulthood, the focus becomes shifting from the anxiety of common struggles to the development of self-assurance and poise.

As confidence in oneself is established, maintaining healthy commitments promotes values, goals, and positive relationships. This momentum fuels the shift from external to internal motivation, which naturally generates greater academic and vocational focus, social connection and independence.
